ATHENS, Ohio (March 16, 2004) -- The Ohio University Presidential Search and Screening Committee is considering a strong field of prospects and remains on schedule to name a new president by the end of spring quarter.
"The committee is in the process of reviewing potential prospects and matching their backgrounds against the criteria we have set. An important aspect we're considering is to look at what challenges and opportunities the university will face in the coming years," said Ohio University Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Walter following Monday's (March 15) meeting on campus.
The committee remains on a timetable that is designed to conduct interviews with candidates during April and to present final candidates to the Board of Trustees in May.
"We're on a timetable I'm comfortable with," Walter said. "At the appropriate time, as consistent with Ohio University's history and tradition, when the final prospects become candidates, they will be invited to campus for further interviews."
"I'm very pleased with where we are, the way the process is going and how people on the committee are working together," Walter said.
The 20-member committee includes representation of an array of university and community constituencies, including university students, faculty, deans, trustees, staff, administrators, alumni, the University Foundation and the Athens community.
Walter emphasized some of the important qualities of the university's next president.
"The next president will have a strong commitment to academic life and a very strong academic background. We also want an individual who believes in diversity as an important objective of the university," Walter said. Among other criteria identified for the next president are personal integrity, openness to challenge and critique, ability to inspire others, outstanding communication skills, the ability to build consensus for a clear vision for the university, a high level of energy to function as a team player and a strong, dynamic leadership style.
The search committee will next meet following the university's Board of Trustees meeting on April 16.
A.T. Kearney Inc. of Alexandria, Va., is assisting the search committee in identifying and screening candidates.
