ATHENS, Ohio (March 10, 2004) -- "Mixed Messages: Rethinking Postcard Representations" is a new exhibition opening at the Kennedy Museum of Art on March 11. A public reception will be held at the Kennedy Museum on March 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. "Mixed Messages" is curated by Ohio University graduate students in the current Art 564: Museum and Community Art Education class and includes both Art Education and Cultural Studies in Education majors.
The students were inspired to create this exhibition to address issues of cultural representations in an art form such as the postcard. The exhibition explores ideas and stereotypes about people perpetuated through this popular mode of communication. The student curators hope that visitors will engage in dialogues about the postcards; there will be a space for viewers to sit and reflect about the exhibit and they can make comments on the postcards themselves for others to read and respond to.
The class, taught by Art Education Chair Anne Burkhart, Ph.D., includes Nicholas Polizzi, Connie Wolfe, Terence Oliver, Barrett Skrypeck, Janeece Henes and Esam Alhadi. The exhibit is part of a continuing collaboration between the Kennedy Museum of Art and the Art Education area of the Ohio University School of Art. The Kennedy Museum provides laboratory gallery space and professional guidance for this graduate course. The exhibit will be on view through June 3.
The Kennedy Museum of Art is located in historic Lin Hall at the Ridges on the Ohio University campus.
