The 10th annual RecycleMania competition launches Jan. 17, and all members of the Ohio University community are encouraged to do their best to recycle more than the competition.
“If all 21,000 students and 3,500 faculty, staff and administrators (at OHIO) did just a little, chances are it would propel us near or to the top of the hundreds of schools competing,” said Ed Newman, Ohio University Recycling and Refuse manager.
That means when it comes to aluminum, glass, cardboard and paper, don’t toss it – recycle it in one of the many recycling receptacles around campus.
Newman cofounded RecycleMania in 2001 with his counterpart at Miami University. The friendly rivalry takes place over a 10-week period every year; schools report recycling and trash data that are then ranked according to the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita and the highest recycling rate.
The competition has grown from two schools in 2001 to more than 500 in 2009, including colleges and universities throughout the United States and beyond. Last year, 69.4 million pounds of refuse were recycled through RecycleMania efforts.
