Revisions were recently approved for Ohio University’s cell phone allowance policy.
The revised policy includes three categories of employees who are eligible to receive a maximum $25 per month cell phone allowance to subsidize their personal cell phone service.
The categories include: employees who must take phone calls outside of work hours; field service or maintenance employees who may not be in an assigned office but still need to make calls throughout the day; and employees who have an assigned office, but do not spend the majority of their time in that office.
"The biggest impact is that the revised policy will be limiting the amount that will be paid out for personally owned cell phones used for university business," said Controller Gina Fetty. "The intent of the revised policy is not to cover the entire cost of those cell phones, but to subsidize the cost when routinely used for university business."
The revised policy also includes an exception to the prohibition of university-owned cell phones when health, safety or regulatory justification can be established.
