Ohio University students welcome moms and dads this weekend for the second Parents Weekend of the 2009-10 school year.
Junior Mike Calderone said he is excited to spend the weekend with his parents. “It’s a great chance for me to spend time with them and to show them around Athens since they don’t get down here too often,” he said.
The finance and management major, originally from Houston, Texas, said this weekend’s agenda includes going to Saturday’s basketball game and attending other events around campus.
A lineup of activities planned for the weekend:
- A Collaborative Student Exhibition, featuring art from a variety of regional artists, Bachelors of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibitions and School of Art faculty members, will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Trisolini Gallery in Baker University Center. Admission is free.
- OHIO hockey will host the Cyclones of Iowa State at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6, at Bird Ice Arena. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults.
- Bruce Dalzell will host "Open Stage with Bruce Dalzell" -- the longest-running open stage in Athens -- from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Feb. 5, at the Front Room in Baker University Center. Admission is free.
- Support the Bobcats women’s swimming and diving team as they compete against Eastern Michigan in MAC Conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Aquatic Center. Admission is free.
- OHIO women’s basketball will take on University of Toledo at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Convocation Center. Admission is free for students with a university ID and adult tickets are $5.
- Students and parents looking to flex their trivia skills can attend an Ohio University rendition of the popular game show “Family Feud.” Two teams will battle each other to name the most popular responses to survey-type questions. Join in the fun from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Admission is free.
- Those wishing to get in touch with their inner child can enjoy University Program Council’s screening of “Where the Wild Things Are,” Spike Jonze’s 2009 adaptation of the popular children’s book. The film begins at 9 p.m. Sat., Feb. 6, at the Baker University Center Theatre and costs $1 with a university ID.

In years past, Parents Weekend has been a time for students and parents to enjoy time together. Here, mother Vickie Steiner, stepdad Jim Davenport and son and student Mike Steiner laugh during a comedy sketch in Baker University Center Ballroom.
