Music concert to feature school faculty

From staff reports
The School of Music will present a unique faculty recital featuring the OhioWinds woodwind quintet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, at the Recital Hall in Glidden Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.
“All the members of the quintet are full-time applied professors on their instruments,” said C. Scott Smith, associate professor of horn and member of OhioWinds. “There are very few professional wind ensembles in existence, because most wind ensembles or wind bands are made up of students.”
The recital will feature a variety of music from the 20th century, including compositions by Valerie Coleman, Paul Hindemith, Gyorgi Ligeti and Gordon Jacob. The Gordon Jacob Sextet’s music featured in the concert is rarely performed. The performance of these pieces will highlight the striking contrast in the musical styles of each composer.
“We have prepared some very unique works for this concert,” Smith said. “Each composer is a genius in their own rite, and in every piece the composers have created very interesting and different musical colors.”
OhioWinds is composed of faculty members in the Ohio University School of Music: Alison Brown Sincoff, flute/piccolo; Michele Fiala, oboe/English Horn; Rebecca Rischin, clarinet; Matthew Morris, bassoon; and C. Scott Smith, horn.
In addition, the group will be assisted by Christopher Smith, piano; and Roger Braun, percussion, on some of the pieces.
