Ohio University's College Adjustment Program (CAP) recently turned 30 years old and will celebrate with a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in the Friends of the Library Room in Alden Library. The event is free and open to the public.
CAP is a TRIO Student Support Services program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that provides academic advising and tutoring, peer mentoring and other academic services to more than 275 students each year. TRIO programs are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
To qualify for CAP, students must demonstrate academic need and one or more of the following criteria: be a first-generation college student, meet federal-income requirements or have a documented disability registered with the university's Office of Disability Services.
The reception will feature remarks from President Roderick J. McDavis, University College Dean David Descutner, former CAP Director Carolyn Allen and current CAP Director Cynthia Kabat King. Allen directed CAP from 1979 to 2002 before retiring and handing the reins of the program to King.
During the reception, three CAP alumni will receive awards for their career achievements and dedication to the program and three current CAP students will be recognized for their academic excellence. Ohio University's Office of Student Financial Aid also will receive the Outstanding Advocate Award, which recognizes its 30 years of continuing support of CAP's programs and students.
Since being established in 1979, CAP has served almost 3,500 students and brought in more than $5.7 million in operating dollars. CAP was able to begin offering grant aid in 2002 and to date the program also has given more than $460,000 in grant-aid to students.
