Great Job

Meet November Classified Employee of the Month Shelley Barton

By George Mauzy

Outlook features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly Outlook feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life at and away from work.

Q&A with Shelley Barton, administrative associate in the Allen Student Help Center:

How surprised were you to win this award?

I was very surprised. I was in a staff meeting when four Classified Senate members came in to announce the award. Nearly half of the staff knew about it, but I honestly had no idea.

What is your job title, how long have you worked at OU?

I am an administrative associate in the Allen Student Help Center, a unit of University College.  I've been in my position for three years and I've worked at the OU for almost nine years.

What are the coolest things about your job?

I get to meet a lot of students and staff. The added bonus is our office is in Baker University Center and I can see the escalators from my desk. I think nearly everyone on campus passes in front of our office each day.

What is your hometown?

I live in the "suburbs" of Coolville with my husband, Kevin, and our two daughters, Jessica and Whitney.

What does OU mean to you?

My position allows me the opportunity to help students on a daily basis, and I really enjoy it. The University is also helping me receive an education, which was not available to me previously, and I am also enjoying that.

What are your long-term goals?

I am enrolled in the first-year Classified Development Program. I hope to continue taking classes after the program ends and pursue an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree some day. My family and my husband's family live in the area, so I plan to retire here.

What was the last good book you read?

The Twilight books, but then who hasn't read them?  I'm currently reading "Dearly Devoted Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay, another series which is now a TV show on Showtime.

If you weren't in your present job, you would probably be working as a ______.

I've never really thought about "what if", except "what would I do if I won the lottery?" I don't have an answer to that question either.

What are the most important things to you?

Family and friends are the most important things any of us can have. A good sense of humor doesn't hurt either.

What do you do to relax outside work?

I like to sit by the pool with my best friends, Debbie and Mickey, and I like to watch football and baseball with my husband. I really like to watch sports, but sometimes it's not so relaxing!

What is something that most people don't know about you?

Most people know that I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, but don't know that I'm also a Cincinnati Reds fan. Anyone who watches professional sports will know this is an odd combination.
