Grammy nominated pianist visits campus
Artist’s residency to present "Modern Music That Doesn’t Bite Back"
Apr 9, 2010
From staff reports
Visiting artist and Grammy-nominated pianist Andrew Russo will perform a special recital and lecture, titled "Modern Music that Doesn’t Bite Back," at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the School of Music Recital Hall in Glidden Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Russo is a musical interpreter of uncommon vitality. As a recording artist, he has made a name for himself through his work with many of today’s leading composers in the United States and Europe. He has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia and released more than a dozen commercial recordings, including a self-produced 2006 release for which he received the Grammy nomination.
His performance will feature an eclectic mix of piano styles, covering a wide range of music from all over the world. In the work titled "The Body of Your Dreams," Russo’s piano will be accompanied by a boombox. He also will present pieces such as "Carol of the Bells" and "Firebird Suite" by Igor Stravinsky.
In addition to his activities as a performer, Russo dedicates time to the direction and development of the music program at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., where he is artist-in-residence. Through a number of community partnerships, Russo has exposed people of all different socio-economic backgrounds to the importance of American music and musicians through special presentations at schools in underprivileged areas. He also performs in an eclectic and interactive concert series at Le Moyne College's W. Carroll Coyne Performing Arts Center.
Russo’s performance is part of a week-long residency with the School of Music funded by Arts for Ohio. Russo will be participating by giving lectures in classes such as History of Rick and keyboard repertoire. He also will conduct an interactive workshop with composition classes.
