After placing fourth among eight colleges in the nation, Ohio University is trying to inspire resident hall dwellers to recycle instead of waste.
"The main goal of this competition is to get students and staff to increase their participation in the recycling program, this rivalry is meant to make it fun," said Recycling and Refuse Manager Ed Newman.
Recycle Mania began Monday, Feb. 3. First-year contestant University of Oregon debuted an impressive accumulation of 5.0 pounds per person, proving to offer stiff competition for the defending champion, Bowling Green State University, who recycled an average of 5.1 pounds per person the first week. Ohio University averaged a mere 2.8 pounds per person.
Recycling containers are located near all campus dumpsters and in most resident halls. Though the University maintains a very efficient recycling program, the numbers being generated by the resident and dining halls are far lower than others in the competition.
"The facilities are available," Newman said. "Students and staff just need to take advantage of them."
