African American Studies and the Multicultural Genealogical Center will host Community and Campus Day on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Nelson Commons.
Equipped with a theme of "A Tribute to Family," the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will include exhibits, book readings for children, face painting, historical artifacts and Underground Railroad memorabilia. The mayors of Athens and Kilvert, Ohio, will be in attendance.
Historian and author Henry Burke and Ohio University alumni Alvin and Ada Adams, who helped found the Multicultural Genealogical Center, will share some of the rich history of people of color in the Ohio River Valley. Glenn Barnett will use his genealogical computer database to help people research their family roots.
Some of the scheduled entertainment includes Ohio University Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology Frank Gunderson's African drumming class, singers Emily Butcher and Irvin Mayle, area choirs, musician Phillip Tabler and poet Nicole Griffin.
