ATHENS, Ohio - Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Flight Training Magazine recognized Ohio University's flight training program, part of the Department of Aviation in the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology, as a quality program among medium-sized colleges.
The December 2003 article recommended just six collegiate aviation programs, although there are more than 100 in the nation. "Finding a fit" grouped Ohio University as one of two recommended "mediums," schools with pilot enrollments ranging from 150-500.
Training pilots since 1939, the Department of Aviation's program is one of the oldest aviation schools in the U.S. The time-tested flight school where World War II pilots trained now provides both flight education and aviation management options but prides itself on one-on-one faculty-student interaction.
"Ohio University has the resources of a large university. But, with an enrollment of only 160 pilots in the flight program, we can give our students personalized attention," said Juan Merkt, Department of Aviation chair. The Department also offers students a preferred interview agreement with Air Net Express and internship opportunities with several major airlines.
The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, educates well-rounded professionals with both technical and team-project skills. The Russ College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across the traditional engineering spectrum and in technology disciplines such as aviation, computer science, and industrial technology. Research areas currently receiving significant funding include avionics, distributed and secure computing, fuel cells, oil and gas pipeline corrosion, and environmental pipes and culverts. Named for alumnus Fritz Russ and his wife Dolores, the Russ College is home of the Russ Prize, one of the top three engineering prizes in the world.
