Alden Library relocates large map collection to better assist patrons

ATHENS, Ohio (Jan. 22, 2004) -- To better assist its patrons, the Map Collection in Ohio University's Alden Library was recently relocated to the library's fifth floor and merged with the Government Documents collection. The collection is the library's principal repository for sheet maps and consists of more than 120,000 items.

This move will put the collection in an area with librarians who have more specific knowledge about the materials and will be better suited to assist patrons. Previously, the maps were housed on the first floor of Alden Library.

"The maps within this collection come primarily from agencies in the federal government, and the librarians in the Government Documents Department are experts in managing such materials," said Nancy Rue, associate dean for public services at Alden Library. "This move will improve both access and the quality of assistance for those students and faculty who utilize the Map Collection."

The collection is a depository for the U.S. Geological Survey, the Defense Mapping Agency and the U.S. Superintendent of Documents Library Program. Most maps are general or topographic, but other maps represent subjects such as geology, climate, population, soil, recreation, history, and economics. The collection includes maps for every country in the world, with particular emphasis on Southeast Asia and Africa, and also contains a selective array of atlases, catalogs, and finding aids.

Doreen Hockenberry, head of the Alden Library Government Documents Department, is the Map Collection manager. Additional information about the Map Collection is available on the Libraries' Web pages or by calling the Government Documents Department at (740) 593-2718.

The Ohio University Libraries are ranked among the top research libraries in North America and hold membership in the prestigious Association of Research Libraries. The Libraries offer personalized service, an extensive electronic library, and over 2.4 million volumes, and include the Vernon R. Alden Library, the Music/Dance Library, the Hwa-Wei Lee Annex at the Athens campus, as well as libraries on the five regional campuses.
