Teaching and research cornerstone of OU-COM clinical care

By Susan Green

A commitment to teaching and research transcends all aspects of clinical care. UOMC is a training site for Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) students. Under the supervision of faculty physicians, approximately 200 medical students and 500 residents gain hands-on medical experience that enhances their development of critical diagnostic and clinical skills.

During mobile medical service visits throughout 22 counties in southeastern Ohio, students received clinical experience by working with patients who receive care from the Childhood and Adult Immunization and Healthy Adult Project.

Clinical research, conducted in conjunction with the Office of Research in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, continues to make advances in the area of pharmacology to pursue better treatment and prevention of various chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Phase III Clinical Drug Trials are conducted at UOMC and receive grant support from major pharmaceutical companies.
