OU-COM still committed to community outreach
By Susan Green
The Community Service Programs of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and UOMC are committed to improving the health status of the region. These programs include providing access to a variety of immunization and health screening services to 22 Appalachian counties through a mobile medical service for underserved populations.
Community Service Programs will remain in place after UOMC's privatization. These grant-funded services are offered free of charge or for a small fee. The programs are provided to communities in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control, the Ohio Department of Health, county health departments, Community Action agencies and area hospitals, schools, organizations, businesses and sponsors. These services include:
- Adult immunizations
- Breast and cervical cancer screenings
- Childhood immunizations
- Adult health screenings
- Community health presentations and training
- Americorps program
- Prenatal education and medical support fund
- Medical support fund for children
- Healthy Adult Project
Last year Community Service Programs provided approximately $300,000 in free health screening and disease prevention services.
