Recognitions

CYNTHIA KABAT KING, Academic Advancement Center, was recently appointed director of the center beginning Jan. 1. She has 20 years of experience in program promotion, grant management and staff supervision.

Facilities Management has recognized several employees. DENNIS WINGO and TOM KING were named August Employees of the Month. WINGO has been an Ohio University employee for 24 years and is known to be an excellent worker who is never afraid to tackle a difficult task. He currently works in the Life Safety Shop. KING has been an employee for two years and has been recognized for his excellent work ethic, positive attitude and concern for the satisfaction of his customers. He is a custodian. MARK FROST and ROGER WATKINS were named September Employees of the Month. FROST has been an Ohio University employee since 1984. He is a plumber. WATKINS has been an Ohio University employee since 1969. He is a groundskeeper. LARRY BAKER and STEVE COOPER were named October Employees of the Month. BAKER has been with Facilities Management since 1996. He volunteers as an EMT on the Reedsville Fire Department and currently is a custodian at the University. COOPER has been with Ohio University for 19 years. This is COOPER's second Employee of the Month Award. He currently is a preventive maintenance technician for Custodial Services. JUDY MATHENY and WAYNE SHARP were named November Employees of the Month. MATHENY is an accounting associate for Facilities Management and has been an Ohio University Employee since 1972. She has been recognized for her cheerful attitude and approachability as well as her accuracy with data records and billing. SHARP has been an Ohio University employee since 1998 and is a safety system technician. He has been recognized for responding quickly to radio calls and always arriving with a "can do" attitude. Each recipient of this award receives a personalized plaque, a certificate of appreciation, one month's membership to WellWorks, a Facilities Management coffee stein, two complimentary tickets to an athletic event and a regular day off from work with pay.

CAROL KNIGHT, dean's office Ohio University-Eastern Campus, was honored as the Classified Employee of the Month for August 2002. She is known for her positive attitude regarding her work, being dependable and completing quality work in a timely manner.

JOE BERNT, journalism, was elected head of the Magazine Division at this summer's Asssociation for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Convention. He also received the HTC Tutor of the Year Award from students and alumni of the Honors Tutorial College.

JAN SLATER, journalism, was interviewed and videotaped for the recently released documentary of "Coca-Cola - The History of an American Icon." SLATER was also elected chair of the advertising division of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication in September 2002.

DANIEL RIFFE, journalism, was named Presidential Research Scholar in the social and behavioral sciences in September 2002. The five-year award is given by the Council for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity and comes with an annual stipend to support research expenses.

GUIDO STEMPEL, journalism, wrote "Mass Communication Research and Theory," published by Allyn & Bacon, Boston, Mass., 2002.

JAN SLATER, journalism, and John Philip Jones co-wrote "What's In A Name: Advertising and the Concept of Brands," published by M.E. Sharpe, Armonk, N.Y., 2002. SLATER also wrote Louisiana Branding: Come as You Are: Leave Different, a chapter in "Destination Branding: Crafting the Unique Place Proposition," published by Butterworth Heinemann, St. Louis, Mo., 2002.

BERNHARD DEBATIN, journalism, wrote Digital Divide and Digital Content: Foundations of Internet Ethics, a chapter in "Media and Ethics," published by Stuttgart, 2002.

GILLIAN ICE, College of Osteopathic Medicine, wrote "Daily Life in a Nursing Home: Has It Changed in 25 Years?" in the Journal of Aging Studies, Vol. 16, 2002.

MARKUS BOETTCHER, physics and astronomy, and others, co-wrote "Conversion of Relativistic Pair Energy into Radiation in the Jets of Active Galactic Nuclei" in Astronomy & Astrophysics, Vol. 393, 2002.

ESMOND-KIGER, KIRCH, YOST, TUCKER and CUTRIGHT also co-wrote and presented "Linking Team Effectiveness and Emotional Intelligence" at the Conference Proceedings of the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences in Las Vegas, Nev., in February 2002.

M. L. TUCKER, management systems, wrote and presented "Incorporating Community Service Learning into a Professional Communication Course" in a panel presentation at the 67th Annual Convention of the Association for Business Communication in Cincinnati, Ohio in October 2002.

CHRIS YODER, Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development, wrote and presented "Adequate Monitoring and Assessment and Refined Water Quality Standards are Essential in Watershed Management" at the World Watershed Summit for America's Clean Water Foundation in Washington, D.C. in October 2002.

GAR ROTHWELL, environmental and plant biology, and MIHAI TOMESCU, graduate student, co-wrote and presented "Evidence for Pre-Tracheophyte Terrestrial Communities from the Early Silurian of Virginia" at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Denver, Colo. in October 2002.

JAMES BOVE, College of Osteopathic Medicine, wrote and presented "Ultrasound/Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy" at a meeting of Results Oriented at the EndoSurgery Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio in October 2002.

KAREN MONTGOMERY-REAGAN, College of Osteopathic Medicine, wrote and presented "Risk of Adolescence" at the Athens Consortium meeting in Athens, Ohio, in October 2002.

GILLIAN ICE, College of Osteopathic Medicine, wrote and presented "Thinking Too Much: The Meaning of Stress for Older Kenyan Caregivers" at a meeting of the American Anthropological Association in New Orleans, La. in November 2002. ICE wrote and presented "Factors Influencing Cortisol Levels and Rhythm in Healthy Older Adults" at a meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Boston, Mass., in November 2002. ICE also wrote and presented "A Look at a Continent in Crisis: Direct and Indirect Effects of the HIV Crisis on Physical and Emotional Well-Being in Africa" at the American Osteopathic Association Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., in October 2002.

FRANK HORODYSKI, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and KYEONG-YEOLL LEE, College of Osteopathic Medicine, co-wrote and presented "Regulation of Manduca Allatotropin (Manse-AT) Gene Expression" at the Invertebrate Neuropeptide Conference in Hua Hin, Thailand in January 2002. HORODYSKI, LEE and MARY CHAMBERLIN, biological sciences, co-wrote and presented "Analysis of Alternatively Spliced Manduca Allatotropin mRNAs Predicts the Synthesis of Additional Bioactive Peptides in a Tissue- and Developmentally-Regulated Manner" at the 4th International Symposium on Molecular Insect Science in Tucson, Ariz. in June 2002. HORODYSKI, Robert Maxwell and William Welch of the University of Nevada, co-wrote "Isolation, Characterization, Sequencing, Cloning and Molecular Modeling of JH diol kinase, a New Enzyme of Juvenile Hormone Metabolism" which they presented with Kathleen Schegg and David Schooley at the 4th Annual Symposium on Molecular Insect Science in Tucson, Ariz. in June 2002.
