Here's a sampling of recent Ohio University mentions in the media:

Lights! Camera! Action! An Ohio University-Zanesville Campus sponsored docu-drama, "Passages to Freedom," premiered recently on the regional campus. The 30-minute award-winning video tells the story of a real slave family who escaped from Virginia in 1852. The film, which has been accepted to air on PBS, will be used in area schools by the Putnam Underground Railroad Education (PURE) Center as a teaching tool.

"The video only enhances our area's history," PURE trustee Carlotta Workman told the Zanesville Times Recorder. "The Underground Railroad really brought the races together to learn that blacks and whites can coexist peacefully. That's a lesson worth repeating."

With Thanksgiving approaching, an Ohio University study drew coverage from the Scripps Howard News Service. The study, conducted by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, revealed that the average American will sit down to a ham- or turkey-centered feast this year with approximately 13 guests, almost all of whom are related.

An overwhelming 90 percent of respondees said they would be celebrating Thanksgiving Day with a special meal, making it the most universally celebrated holiday in America. Approximately 80 percent of the nation plans on putting up a Christmas tree this year. "Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday regardless of what your race or religion is," said Barbara Rainey, author of the new historical book "Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember."

"It gives us a greater appreciation for what we have been given. We so often think of the holiday as a time of food, family and football. Those things are all very important. But we can forget why we celebrate this day," Rainey said.

Victory came in early November for Union County judge and former Ohio University Trustee Charlotte Coleman Eufinger in more ways than one. Eufinger, elected last week as the county's probate/juvenile court judge, is a rarity in Ohio's courts. Of the 708 judges in Ohio, only about 20 percent are female, reported a recent Columbus Dispatch.

"I didn't run as a Democrat," Eufinger said. "I ran as an attorney, as a mother and as a person. Still, this is very significant for the party, and I hope it helps us do other good things."

With on-field security concerns coming to the fore after the recent Miami vs. Marshall football contest, USA Today detailed several schools' game management plans. Florida, which Ohio played earlier this season, spends between $75-100,000 per game on security. The Bobcats spend approximately $3,400.

Students from Kentucky that live along the Ohio border will now be able attend Ohio University-Southern Campus at the in-state tuition rate. The agreement between the Ohio Board of Regents and Kentucky Council of Postsecondary Education is similar to those already in place in the Cincinnati, Toledo and Steubenville areas. The Ohio News Network reports that the program will go into effect Jan. 1, 2003.

Ohio University's College of Health and Human Services has signed an agreement with an Asian business school, Bangalore, to offer a postgraduate program in health administration. Similar to international MBA programs, this new pact differs in that students will be trained in health and hospital administration, reported the Press Trust of India. Courses offered will be taught by select faculty from the University's College of Health Sciences and Bangalore.
