Recognitions

BRUCE E. PHILPOT, Russ College of Engineering and Technology, was appointed managing director of the Center for Automatic Identification. The Center provides educational research services in bar coding, Radio Frequency ID, smart card, biometrics and other sectors in the Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) industry. PHILPOT is a 14-year veteran of the AIDC industry and has been actively involved for several years as a presenter at the AIDC Technical Institute held at Ohio University each July.

ARTHUR MARINELLI, College of Business, received the Senior Distinguished Faculty Award at the Academy of Legal Studies Annual Meeting. This award is given to one member each year and is based on the record of the person's scholarly research and publications, teaching excellence and service to the legal profession and the Academy of Legal Studies in Business.

CHARLES W. JARRETT, sociology - Southern campus, served as a visiting professor at the University of South Carolina Beaufont at Hilton Head. JARRETT taught Sociology 355, Minority Group Relations from June through July 2002.

ELIZABETH WESTENBARGER is retiring after over 16 years of service at Ohio University as manager of accounts payable for the Office of the Vice President for Finance.

DEBBIE DePEEL, journalism, has been awarded Outstanding Employee of the Quarter for the College of Communication.

PATRICK WASHBURN, journalism, was installed as the president of the American Journalism Historians Association.

GARY MODEN, counseling and higher education, and MICHAEL WILLIFORD, institutional research, wrote Ohio's challenge: A clash of performance funding and base budgeting, a chapter in "Funding public colleges and universities for performance: Popularity, problems and prospects," published by Rockefeller Institute Press, Albany, N.Y., 2002.

MICHAEL BUGEJA, journalism, wrote "Interpersonal divide: The search for community in a Technology Age," to be published by Oxford University Press, 2002.

ANNE COOPER-CHEN, journalism, and Michiho Tanaka co-wrote Public relations in Japan, a chapter in "An anthology of public relations in Asia," published by Prentice Hall, 2002.

DAVID M. COLLOPY, computer science technology - Lancaster campus, wrote "Introduction to C programming: A modular approach, revised 2nd edition," published by Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, N.J., 2002.

IRWIN A. UNGAR, environmental and plant biology, and M. Ajmal Khan of the University of Karachi, co-wrote "Influence of dormancy regulating compounds and salinity on the germination of Zygophyllum simplex" in Seed Science and Technology, Vol. 30, 2002.

CHARLES W. JARRETT, sociology - Southern campus, and DAVID M. LUCAS, interpersonal communication, co-wrote "Rapid rural appraisal: Teaching undergraduates research in rural Mexico" in the Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, 2003.

ROBERT K. CARR, biological sciences, and Gary L. Jackson of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, co-wrote "New information on an old fish: Bungartius perissus (Placodermi: Arthrodira)" in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Vol. 22, 2002.

ANDREA BAKER, sociology, wrote "What makes an online relationship successful? Clues from couples who met in cyberspace" in CyberPsychology and Behavior, 2002.

Presentations

ANDREA BAKER, sociology, wrote and presented "Intimate bonding in online communities: Just like real life?" at a meeting of the Association for Internet Research in Maastricht, Netherlands in October 2002.

ARTHUR MARINELLI, College of Business, wrote and presented "Legal issues dealing with arbitration in international contracts" at the 2002 International Conference of the Academy of Business Administration in Warsaw, Poland in August 2002. MARINELLI also wrote and presented "Arbitration in international contracts" at the annual meeting of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business in Las Vegas, Nev. in August 2002.

ROBERT K. CARR, biological sciences, and Gary L. Jackson of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, co-wrote "New information on an old fish: Bungartius perissus (Placodermi: Arthrodira)" at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Norman, Okla. in October 2002.

CHARLES W. JARRETT, sociology - Southern campus, wrote and presented "Introducing folknography: A study of Gullah culture" at the Gwine Bak Conference: A history of Gullah/Geechee culture on St. Helena Island, S.C., in July 2002. JARRETT also presented this paper at the 65th Annual Meeting of the Rural Sociological Society in Chicago, Ill. in August 2002.

CHARLES BUCHANAN, interdisciplinary arts, wrote and presented "Hagiographic representation in the Latin High Middle Ages: Reception, inspiration and formulation" at the 29th Annual Saint Louis Conference on Manuscript Studies at the Vatican Film Library of Saint Louis University in October 2002.

BRIAN McCARTHY, environmental and plant biology, Carolyn Keiffer, alumna, and Steven Rogstad of the University of Cincinnati, co-wrote and presented "Ecology and genetics of a chestnut-dominated hardwood stand in West Salem, Wisconsin" at the annual meeting of the American Chestnut Foundation in La Crosse, Wis. in October 2002.
