High-risk flu shot clinics
Wednesday, Oct. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 31, 9 to 11 a.m.
University Osteopathic Medical Center
The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine's community service programs will provide flu shots to persons at high risk or with immune system dysfunctions. A $6 donation is requested for each shot, or Medicare can be billed with card.

Modern Languages Department Poetry Night
Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Richard Danner will read from his recent poetry in English; Betsy Partyka will read poems by Paraguayan poet Renee Ferrer taken from her newly-published translation "Itinerary of Desire," and Daniel Torres will read from "Fusilado Dios" (God at the Firing Squad) and other works, reading in Spanish with English translations. The creative writing program in the English Department will have literary readings to celebrate the launch of Ohio University's new literary magazine "Hotel Amerika." The magazine features the finest in contemporary poetry, fiction and essays from prominent authors. The reading is free and open to the public.

Battle of the Bands

Local bands will be duking it out at Ohio University-Zanesville as the Electronic Media Club and C.A. House Music sponsoring a "Battle of the Bands." Participating groups include Disturbing the Peace, Up and Atom, Shadowboxing, Grovel, Fakeside and Numbous. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. The evening will be filled with drummers, dancers, cultural expression and of course, soul food! Tickets are $12 and are on sale in the Office of Multicultural Programs, 205 Baker University Center. The vendors will be: ADAMA and Les Amis Pan-Africains Imports and Exports (Dakar, Senegal) from Columbus, Ohio---specializing in formal and casual African attire for women, men, and children as well as natural hair styling (braids, locks, twists, etc). Please bring non-perishable food items; the proceeds will be donated to Good Works homeless shelter. This event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs and partially funded by African-American Studies, Black Student Cultural Programming Board and International Student Union. Visiting Rufus Putnam Professor Jennifer Lawson will speak on "Carrying Baggage and Cameras: Making Media about other People." Ayanna Gregory "Music and the Movement"
Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
Baker University Center Ballroom
This lecture/performance is by Ayanna Gregory, daughter of comedian and activist Dick Gregory. She explores the role of music in liberation struggles throughout history, focusing on Black liberation movements. Her songs move from the Atlantic Slave Trade to slavery to Civil Rights and up to the present. In the second phase of her lecture, Ayanna challenges the audience to assess contemporary music and helps them recognize the damage induced by negative music.
