Recognitions

JENNIFER HEISEY, alumni relations, was named this year's Outstanding Adviser by the Association of Student Advancement Programs (ASAP). HEISEY serves as an adviser to the University's Student Alumni Board and also advises students in ASAP's six-state District 5 region. Student Alumni Board members nominated her for the top adviser award.

DIAGNOSTIC HYBRIDS, INC., a company developed through Ohio University's Innovation Center, received an Emerging Technology Award from the Ohio Department of Development. This award is presented annually to recognize the accomplishments of small, technology-oriented companies in Ohio. It honors companies furthering current technologies or pursuing emerging ones.

RITA MEI CHING NG, interpersonal communications, wrote Culture and Modernization: The Case of the People's Republic of China, a chapter in "Chinese Communication Studies: Contexts and Comparisons," published by Greenwood Publishing Group, Westport, Conn., 2002.

Publications

DAVID DRABOLD, physics and astronomy, and MURAT DURANDURDU, graduate student, co-wrote "Ab Initio Simulation of Pressure-Induced Low-Energy Excititations in Amorphous Silicon" in Physical Review B, Vol. 66, 2002.

KELLY JOHNSON, biological sciences, and JENNIFER LAST and GABRIEL HERRICK, graduate students, co-wrote "High Tolerance of Alderfly Larvae (Sialis spp: Megaloptera) to Metals is Not Affected by Water pH" in Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, Vol. 69, 2002.

CHARLES OVERBY, engineering, wrote "Women, Article 9, and Peace" in Women and The Movement, 2001. OVERBY also wrote "Article 9's Death March" in Disarmament, 2001.

Presentations

CHARLES OVERBY, engineering, wrote and presented "The Demise of Japan's War-Renouncing Article 9 – The World's Foremost Law for Peace, Justice, and Non-Violent Conflict Resolution" at the Fourteenth Annual Conference of The Concerned Philosophers for Peace at St. Bonaventure University in New York in October 2001. OVERBY also wrote and presented "The Impending Demise of Japan's War-Renouncing Article 9, and A Nobel Peace Prize for A9" at Hofstra University's "2002: A Peace Odyssey" Conference in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, in November 2001.

HARVEY BALLARD, environmental and plant biology, and AUREA CORTES-PALOMEC, co-wrote "Isolation Mechanisms and Gene Flow Between Co-Occuring Species of Mexican Violets (Viola)" which CORTES-PALOMEC presented at a meeting of the Botanical Society of America in Madison, Wis. in August 2002. BALLARD, GAR ROTHWELL, environmental and plant biology, and Ruth Stockey of the University of Alberta-Edmonton, co-wrote "Reassessing Relationships Among Duckweeds and Aroids" which BALLARD presented at a meeting of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists/Botanical Society of America in Madison, Wis. in August 2002. BALLARD and ROSS McCAULEY, graduate student, co-wrote Phylogenetic Relations and New Combinations in the North American Species of Froelichia (Amaranthaceae)" which McCAULEY presented at a meeting of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists in Madison, Wis. in August 2002. BALLARD and Duane Kolterman of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, co-wrote "Genetic Diversity and Affinities of Caesalpinia Monensis Britton in the Greater Antilles Based on ISSR Markers" which Kolterman presented at a meeting of the Botanical Society of America in Madison, Wis. in August 2002.

KELLY JOHNSON, biological sciences, and MELANIE HILL, JENNIFER LAST and COREY KANUCKEL, graduate students, co-wrote "Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Responses to Acid Mine Impact in Southeastern Ohio Streams" which JOHNSON presented at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Applied Research Conference in Athens, Ohio in August 2002.
