Ohio Athletics, OU-COM team up to save lives

By Joseph Hughes

Ohio Athletics and the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine are sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive on Thursday, Jan. 30, from noon until 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center lobby.

Roanna BrazierIn support of the drive, Ohio softball coach Roanna Brazier plans to donate, along with 17 of her players. "I think it's a very awesome thing Coach Brazier and her team is doing," said Tia Trivison, University Osteopathic Medical Center manager of marketing and public relations. "It shows tremendous leadership and I commend them on their decision.

"We're excited that they chose to help in such a way. They've really set the tone for the rest of the University community," she said.

Blood supplies are critically low in the region, Trivison said. So low, in fact, that there is a less-than-half-day supply of four blood types. Three days is ideal during the winter, factoring for routine needs and a cushion in case of emergency, particularly if the weather remains unpredictable.

Once done donating, individuals can treat themselves to food from a variety of local merchants. Pizza, calzones and chicken wings, along with other specialties, will be available.

"The best part about the drive is that anyone can do it," Trivison said. "It's not hard to donate blood. All you have to do is lay down while a technician does the work. Plus, when you're done, you can have a refreshing meal in the cantina."

For Brazier, the decision to help was easy. "It was the right thing to do," she said. "To me, it was easy to give up a day of practice to help the community. Ohio Athletics has always supported the area. It's not about the press we receive, it's only about doing the right thing."
