    Ohio University professional activity announcements

    Here's a look at recent accomplishments of Ohio University faculty and staff.

    Recognitions

    ERIN BELIEU, English, received kudos for her second book of poetry "One Above and One Below" (Cooper Canyon Press). The book won the Ohioana Book Award in poetry and the Society of Midland Authors Award, and BELIEU received a $10,000 Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Award. BELIEU's first book, "Infanta," was selected for the 1995 National Poetry Series and was named one of the best poetry books of the year by the National Book Critics' Circle and The Washington Post.

    SHARON DENHAM, nursing, was awarded a scholarship to attend the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) three-day training sponsored by the American Association of College Nurses and City of Hope in Washington, D.C.

    BROOKE HALLOWELL, hearing, speech and language sciences, is an official reviewer for the National Institute of Health (NIH). She will serve on review panels to evaluate research proposals being considered for NIH funding.

    AVRELL OVERBY, physical therapy, was re-appointed by Ohio Governor Bob Taft to the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Athletic Trainers Board, the board that licenses professionals in these fields and monitors compliance with licensing laws.

    KATHLEEN TENNANT, nursing, was awarded a scholarship to attend the AACN/Fuld Community-based Nursing Education pre-conference in December in Washington, D.C. Sessions will focus on innovations in community-based education, environmental health, parish nursing, and the use of technology in community-based education.

    KELLI WHITLOCK, research communications, was named President-elect of the University Research Magazine Association, which includes editors from more than 50 research universities nationwide.

    TIMOTHY G. ANDERSON, geography, wrote "From Ravaged to Recovered: The Landscape of Southern Ohio's Hanging Rock District" in Now and Then, Vol. 18, 2001. ANDERSON also wrote "Proto-Industrialization, Sharecropping, and Outmigration in Nineteenth-Century Rural Westphalia" in Journal of Peasant Studies, Vol. 29, 2001.

    DAVID DRABOLD and NORMAND MOUSSEAU, physics and astronomy, Serge M. Nakhmanson of North Carolina State University, G. T. Barkema and P. M. Voyles co-wrote "Low Strain Models of Paracrystalline Silicon" in International Journal of Modern Physics B, Vol. 15, 2001. DRABOLD and X. Zhang co-wrote "Simulation of the Response of Amorphous Se to Light" in International Journal of Modern Physics B, Vol. 15, 2001.

    DOUG FRANKLIN, campus recreation, published "The Entrepreneurial Challenge" in the October 2001 issue of Athletic Business, Vol. 25, No. 10.

    MARGARET MANOOGIAN, human and consumer sciences, A. Zvonkovic and L. McGraw wrote a book chapter titled "The Ebb and Flow of Family Life: How Families Experience Being Together and Apart," in K. Daly (Ed.), Minding Time in Family Experience: Vol. 3, Oxford, GB Elsevier Science.

    IRWIN A. UNGAR, environmental and plant biology, and Carolyn Keiffer of Miami University co-wrote "Seed Banks and Seed Population Dynamics of Halophytes" and "The Effect of Competition and Edaphic Conditions on the Establishment of Halophytes on Brine Effected Soils" in Wetlands Ecology and Management, Vol. 9, 2001. UNGAR and Todd Egan of Elmira College co-wrote "Competition between Salicornia europaea and Atriplex prostrata along an Experimental Salinity Gradient" in Wetlands Ecology and Management, Vol. 9, 2001.

    Presentations

    SHARON DENHAM, nursing, presented "Family Health: A Model to Increase International Understanding" at the International Council of Nurses in Copenhagen, Denmark.

    MAURICIO FERREIRA, recreation and sport sciences, presented "Sport Event Attributes and Contextual Effects on Consumer Preferences for College Sport Events" at the ninth annual European Association of Sport Management Congress in Vitoria, Spain.

    JENNIFER HINTON, recreation and sport sciences, and S. Wilson of Cortland University presented "Connecting Communities and Universities: Benefits of Service Learning with Older Adults" at the American Therapeutic Recreation Association Annual Conference. HINTON and B. McCormick, of Indiana University, presented "Reform in Therapeutic Recreation Education: Where Do We Go from Here?" at the American Therapeutic Recreation Association Annual Conference.

    WILLIAM J. LAMBERT, health sciences, wrote and presented "Information Overload: Impact on Society and Health" before the American College of Healthcare Information Administrators and the American Academy of Medical Administrators in October in Las Vegas.

    KARL RUNSER and CHRIS MIEWALD, Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development (ILGARD), participated in the third annual conference on "The Women of Appalachia, Their Heritage and Accomplishments" at Ohio University's Zanesville campus this fall. RUNSER and MIEWALD moderated a panel discussion that addressed the effect Ohio's welfare reform mandate had on women in Morgan County, Ohio.

    RICK SHRIVER, electronic media, chaired a panel of presentations at the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Association of Asian Studies Conference. The topic of the conference was "Asian Telecommunications: Human Rights and Wrongs." SHRIVER moderated panelists' discussions and presented some of his own discoveries in his paper "Malaysian Media: Ownership, Control and Musical Content."
