Democracy in Latin America, a speech sponsored by the Contemporary History Institute, will be given by Howard J. Wiard, senior associate for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, at 4 p.m. Jan. 17 in Baker University Center's 1804 Room. Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 21. University officially closed. Classes not in session.
Following are some of the activities that have been planned in honor of Martin Luther King Day:
- Roland Martin, editor of BlackAmericaWeb.com and news editor of Savoy magazine, will speak about "Using Mass Media to Liberate Black America," during a brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 21 in Baker University Center Ballroom.
Vic Carter, public relations manager for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and news anchor for WJZ-13 in Baltimore, Md., will be a special guest.
Tickets for the brunch, sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha, are $9 for students and $12 for the general public. A vigil will be held at the College Gate following the brunch.
- Lindley Cultural Center is sponsoring a lecture by J. Webster Smith, director of undergraduate studies, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in Baker University Center Ballroom. Smith will discuss "From the Dream to the Mountain/Reassessing the King Legacy." This event is free and open to the public.
The Arts
Birds in Art, a traveling exhibition from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin, features various media around the theme of birds and comes to the Kennedy Museum of Art, noon-5 p.m., until Feb. 3. Contact: 593-0955 or www.ohiou.edu/museum.
"Annie Get Your Gun," the Broadway musical telling the comedic and romantic tales of expert riflewoman Annie Oakley, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Tickets: $10-$20. Contact: 593-1780 or www.ohiou.edu/performingarts.
Carving Demonstrations will feature chainsaw carver D. Whittlings carving a full-sized eagle and other works by Athens-area carvers from 1-5 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Kennedy Museum of Art.
