Tymas-Jones travels to South America with Ohio Arts Council

At the invitation of the Ohio Arts Council, Dean of the College of Fine Arts Raymond Tymas-Jones traveled to Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina, last month with a group of arts administrators and the council's members.

The trip's purpose was to explore new international cultural partnerships, which are part of the council's International Program that brings together people of diverse backgrounds to create partnerships between Ohio artists and arts organizations and professionals from other countries.

Ohio Arts Council Communications Manager Jami Goldstein said, "Ohio University is a good partner for future projects and exchanges, which is why we asked Raymond to join us."

Tymas-Jones currently is drafting a proposal to promote future exchanges. The proposal will then be submitted to the council.

Study pays students to take standardized test

A research study being conducted at Ohio University's Zanesville campus will pay high school juniors and seniors to take a practice version of the ACT, an assessment test college-bound students must take to get into most universities.

As part of a research study conducted by Frank LoSchiavo, assistant professor of psychology, students will be paid $18 to complete the lengthy examination.

"This really is a win-win situation," LoSchiavo said. "Students will benefit and my colleagues and I will gain important information that will help us construct more valid educational testing instruments."

The test is open to students in Muskingum and surrounding counties. Participants have the opportunity to prepare for the actual ACT by completing a retired version of the test in an authentic testing environment. Participants will receive their scores via U.S. mail within two to three weeks of testing. Their scores from the practice test will help them identify areas in which they need to improve before taking the actual ACT.

The test will be offered at the Ohio University-Zanesville campus Jan. 19, Feb. 23 and March 16. Students can reserve a seat by contacting Billie Mautz at (740) 588-1505 or mautz@ohio.edu. For more information regarding the project visit www.zanesville.ohiou.edu/psych/act.

Ohio Volleyball to hold instructional clinic

The Ohio volleyball team will hold an annual instructional clinic for middle and high school girls, starting on Sunday, Jan. 27, on the Ohio University campus.

The clinic, which costs $50 per participant, will have separate sessions for middle school girls (grades six through eight) and high school girls (grades nine through 12). The middle school participants will have their session from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., while the high school participants will follow from 1 to 3 p.m.

The first of the two two-hour sessions will be on January 27, while the clinic will conclude with a second session the following Saturday, Feb. 3, at the same times.

Members of the Ohio women's volleyball coaching staff, as well as Bobcats players, will provide individual skill instruction to clinic participants. In addition, the clinic is provided as preparation for those who wish to tryout for the Ohio Juniors Volleyball Club.

For more information, please contact assistant coach Kirstine Jensen at (740) 593-0211 or by e-mail at jensen@ohio.edu.
