The seminar is designed to help all faculty and instructors with their transition from quarters to semesters in fall quarter 2012. It will consist of an open discussion designed for faculty to share ideas and learn from each other.

Laurie Hatch, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, said one positive aspect of the switch to semesters is that it will allow the scope of courses to be larger and allow more classroom work and projects.

"One of the advantages of a semester system is the ability to teach and learn more in-depth on a topic," said Laurie Hatch, who taught in semesters for more than 20 years at the University of Kentucky.

Hatch said she will also lead discussions on how to set student expectations at the beginning of the semester, how to keep students energized about the course material during the middle weeks of a semester and effective ways to end the semester.

The second fall seminar in the Q2S series will take place from 2:10 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in the Faculty Commons. It will address the concept of creating student learning outcomes for courses. Hatch said every course will have student learning outcomes attached to it once the university switches to semesters and the second seminar will serve as a forum to discuss and share ideas about this topic.
