Solar tour features OHIO's solar-powered composter Oct 2, 2009
Athens and the Ohio University campus are participating this weekend in the seventh annual Ohio Solar Tour, sponsored by Green Energy Ohio and American Solar Energy Society. Featured on the tour is the solar-powered Composting Project on Ohio University's Ridges.
The composting facility was completed in January 2009. As of July 2009, 66 tons of organic waste had been composted in the facility. A 10.03-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array provides about 60 percent of the facility's total energy demands.
The Composting Project will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. The facility is located on The Ridges, near the parking area off of Dairy Lane, which is a half-mile west of the Dairy Barn, on the right.
