Ohio University's Perspectives magazine and Ohio Today magazine have won awards from the regional Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) competition.
Perspectives won the silver medal in "Best Specialized or Unit-Level Magazine." Ohio Today won a silver in the category of "Excellence in Design, Miscellaneous" and a bronze medal for "Excellence in Feature Writing, Individual."
CASE is the leading association for professionals in university communications, marketing and advancement. Ohio University is part of CASE Region V, which includes schools in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The winning entry for Perspectives included the autumn/winter 2007 issue (cover story: "Space Invaders" on invasive plant species) and the spring/summer 2008 issue (cover story: "The Wedding Story" on the history of the commercialization of weddings in America). The winning entries for Ohio Today were from the spring 2008 issue ("Have Engine, Will Travel," on an alumnus' adventurous road trip, recognized for its design) and the fall/winter 2007 issue ("A Life Undercover" about an alumna's work with the CIA, recognized for writing).
Perspectives previously received silver and gold medals in this category of the regional CASE competition in 2006 and 2007, and also won the silver medal in this category of the national competition in 2007. Ohio Today has previously received CASE V awards in writing and other categories. The recent design award marked its first win in that category.
Perspectives, which covers the research, scholarship and creative activity of faculty, staff and students, is produced by the Office of Research Communications, part of the Vice President for Research unit. The editor is Andrea Gibson, and the senior designer and illustrator is Christina Ullman of Ullman Design in Marietta, Ohio.
Ohio Today, which serves the university and alumni communities, is produced by the Division of University Advancement and funded with the support of The Ohio University Foundation. The spring 2008 issue was a collaborative effort involving University Communications and Marketing and University Advancement. The interim editor is Mariel Jungkunz and the designer is Sarah McDowell.
Interns from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism contribute articles and editorial support, and various Ohio University staff and alumni contribute writing, photography and illustrations to both publications.
