Parents Weekend offers jam-packed schedule

Nicole Pariano has a favorite photo hanging on her bedroom wall: a snapshot of her and her dad attending an Ohio University football game during Parents Weekend.

"It was fun to have my dad see my new home and meet my friends' parents," said Pariano, a fifth-year communication major. "He got to see what I was involved in."

This weekend will provide additional chances for students to connect with their parents. The annual Fall Parents Weekend Nov. 7 through 9 on the Athens campus offers events such as the women's volleyball match between Ohio University and Miami, the annual fall ceramic pottery sale and ongoing art exhibitions in the Trisolini gallery in Baker University Center.

According to Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi, Parents Weekend is a chance for students to show their parents the campus and activities they enjoy.

"It's important for parents to get a glimpse into their student's life here at OU," he said. "It helps parents understand the Ohio University experience."

Here's a look at some weekend events:

  • Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, students and parents can attend "Rise and Shine with the 'Rents," a buffet style breakfast in the Baker University Center Ballroom. The breakfast is $5 for students and $7 for others.  At 2 p.m. the Ohio University football team will face Bowing Green at Peden Stadium. Tickets are free for students with a university ID and $25 for general admission.

  • Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. theater students will perform "The Grapes of Wrath," which features one family's journey to California during the Great Depression, at the Elizabeth Evans Baker Theater in Kantner Hall. Admission is free for students with a university ID, $7 for senior citizens and $10 for general admission.

  • Also Saturday night at 8 p.m., B.J. Novak, best known as Ryan "The Temp" on NBC's "The Office," will perform standup at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.  Admission is $7 for students and $10 for non-students.

  • Sunday at 11 a.m., men can walk a mile in women's shoes to raise awareness of sexual assault and gender violence. The walk starts at Baker University Center. Students and parents can also watch the Men's basketball team take on Mercyhurst at the Convocation Center at 2 p.m. or listen to the Singing Men of Ohio, Women's Chorale and Athens Community Children's Chorus in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium at 4 p.m.

Parents Weekend offers plenty of memorable moments, even doing something as simple as stopping at a bake sale, like Max Resnick and his parents, Julius and Harriet, did during his freshman year.
