'Bumping' process for classified not needed

May 13, 2009

University Human Resources announced Wednesday that it has placed the majority of classified employees affected by layoffs into vacant positions that have been frozen for this purpose, eliminating the need to begin the displacement -- or bumping -- process.

Gwen Brooks, director, staffing and records services, said the university has placed 14 of the 18 affected classified employees into comparable jobs at Ohio University. Of the four remaining employees, one is resigning and three do not have enough retention points, or seniority, to displace other classified workers.

"University Human Resources has worked diligently with different departments to place most of the affected employees to minimize the impact of layoffs," Brooks said. "We would like to thank those departments for their cooperation as well as the affected employees for their patience and understanding during this arduous process."

Brooks said that because displacement is not a factor now, Human Resources would wait until June to give 14-day notices to the three remaining employees who do not have enough service credit to displace another worker. That would allow more time for suitable positions to potentially open up at the university, she added.
