Classified Senate holds June meeting Jun 29, 2009 By George Mauzy
Ohio University's Classified Senate held its June meeting on Thursday in Baker University Center.
It was the final meeting for 2008-09 officers, Chair Marlene Swartz, Secretary Cheri Tarantelli and Treasurer Linda Cvetan. They will be replaced on July 1 by Chair-elect Tammy Jordan, Secretary-elect Traci Winchell and Treasurer-elect Jill Estep, respectively. The outgoing officers were presented with appreciation gifts from the senate.
Highlights from the meeting included:
- Swartz announced that the first class of the Classified Development Program will consist of 19 university employees. The employees will begin the 10-quarter professional certificate program in the fall. The professional development program is designed to prepare participants for advancement opportunities at the university.
- Becky Watts, special assistant to the president, said a new ad hoc committee is being formed by President Roderick J. McDavis to address issues stemming from smoking on campus. She said the committee, which will include representation from campus constituent groups, was initiated by students concerned about smoking in close proximity of residence halls.
- Chief Human Resources Officer Luis Lewin said as of June 24, 76 employees had enrolled in the university's Early Retirement Incentive Plan. He said the deadline for eligible employees to accept the retirement package is Aug. 31.
- Estep announced that six self-defense workshops are being planned for classified employees in July and August. The workshops will be conducted by the Ohio University Police Department and the dates will be communicated when finalized. She also announced that the Classified Employee Service Awards luncheon will be held on Oct. 28 in the Baker University Center Ballroom.
- Anita Leach, assistant to executive in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, was named Classified Senate Employee of the Month for June.
