"Funny man" and retired Ohio University faculty member Mel Helitzer will be remembered in a special Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Christ Lutheran Church in Athens. A reception will follow.
Helitzer died on April 11. He served on the faculty of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University for 29 years, retiring in 2008. Helitzer was revered by his students for his practical approach to academic training, and was voted Professor of the Year in 1983. His humor writing class was featured nationally in prominent publications.
Before his work at the University, Helitzer had a successful career in the advertising industry, serving as public relations director of the Toy Guidance Council (1950-55); advertising director, Ideal Toy Corp. (1955-63); executive director for four television programs on ABC and NBC (1962-65); and president and CEO of Helitzer Advertising (1963-79).
