Jul 26, 2009

Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi regrets to inform the Ohio University community that one of our students, Matthew Scott Smith, who fell from a second floor balcony early Sunday morning at his Playground Street residence, has passed away.

Smith, 20, had completed his sophomore year in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was from Loveland, Ohio, near Cincinnati.

"On behalf of Ohio University, we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time," Lombardi said.

Smith was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. on Sunday at O'Blenness Memorial Hospital in Athens.

According to Athens police, the accident is still under investigation.

Students are reminded that they can call Counseling and Psychological Services 24 hours a day/seven days a week at 740-593-1616 to speak with a counselor. Walk-in hours are available at the center in Hudson Hall from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
