OHIO offering variety of King Day festivities

To honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., campus and community groups have scheduled the following activities:

  • Members of the University Interfaith Association will clean and make repairs at the Feed My Sheep food pantry in Mineral, Ohio, on Jan. 19. Volunteers will leave from Hillel, located at 21 Mill St., at 1 p.m. and return by 5 p.m.

  • The Department of Campus Life is hosting a children's supply drive on behalf of Athens Children's Services and is accepting items for infants and school-age children. 



    Donated items should be brought to the Campus Life office in Baker University Center 355 by Jan. 19. For more information, contact Jay Helmer at 740-593-4007 or community.service@ohio.edu.



  • Southern campus' 18th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Celebration will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 in Bowman Auditorium.



    "A Change is Gonna Come..." will be presented by Cicero M. Fain III,  a specialist in early American, African-American and modern African history whose current work,  "Race, River, and the Railroad, Black Huntington, West Virginia, 1871-1914," examines migration and settlement patterns of southern black migrants; the formation of black community; and the varied methods black Huntington's urban industrial workforce (and community) used to combat occupational racism and segregation in Huntington.

  • The Lancaster campus will present "Understanding the Civil Rights Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:  Promoting the Politics of Inclusion, Social Change, and Equality" by Frank Hale Jr. at 4 p.m. on Jan. 29 in Wagner Theatre.


    Hale created the Minority (Morrill) Scholars Program when he was vice provost and professor at Ohio State University. The free presentation is sponsored by the Campus Diversity Committee.
