Ohio University junior Madison "Madie" Anne Barr, 19, of Urbana, Ohio, died Thursday in Cleveland.
Born Sept. 27, 1987, in St. Joseph, Mich., Barr was a communication major in the Scripps College of Communication. After graduation, she hoped to work in Central or South America, where she spent last spring quarter studying in Ecuador as part of an Education Abroad program.
"She fell in love with that region of the world last spring and expressed an interest in working in an embassy after graduation," said Barr's aunt Nancy Pike. "She was a fabulous lady who enjoyed life."
A 2005 graduate of Urbana High School, she was active in soccer, track and field, and band there.
"She was an excellent friend who was incredibly caring and funny. Everyone who met her loved her," said Shelley Goff, a junior from Boston and one of Barr's roommates this year.
"Madie was a fantastic person. She was vivacious and a real sweetheart," added another roommate, Jackie Zimmermann, a junior from Holland, Mich. "She was someone you had to care about."
