Scripps Day, hosted by the Scripps Howard Foundation, will take place on Ohio University's Athens campus Wednesday, Oct. 10.
More than 15 Scripps executives will visit classes in the Scripps College of Communication, critique student resumes and conduct mock interviews. The day, expected to be observed annually, will culminate with a public keynote address by Deanna Brown, president of Scripps Networks' Interactive group.
Scripps Day takes place just more than a year after the Scripps College of Communication dedication, which celebrated a $15 million gift to Ohio University from the Scripps Howard Foundation. In recognition of this gift and $5 million in prior funding, Ohio University renamed the College of Communication.
"Scripps Day is one manifestation of the wonderful partnership we enjoy with the Scripps Howard Foundation," said Dean Gregory Shepherd. "We all know about the foundation's very generous financial support of the Scripps College, but it also gives us great gifts of talent and time. Our students are privileged to interact with highly successful working professionals. These are experiences we are able to provide our students, because of our relationship with the Scripps Howard Foundation, that our peer programs cannot match."
For Scripps Day, professionals from the foundation, the E.W. Scripps Co. and Scripps-owned television stations and newspapers will visit classes in each of the college's five schools. Their subjects will range from broadcasting to graphics and news writing to Internet technology.
"This project is part of our ongoing partnership with the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the new Scripps College of Communication," said Judy Clabes, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation. "It's indicative of the strength of the partnership that we bring human resources and talent from throughout the E.W. Scripps Co. to the campus to work with students and faculty. These are not resources that schools can normally tap into on a concentrated basis."
Brown's keynote address, "Social Media, Your World, Your Opportunity," is set for 5 p.m. in Baker University Center Ballroom A and is open to the public. Brown joined Scripps Networks in April 2007 and has 20 years' experience as a strategic business executive with expertise in new ventures in media, entertainment and technology. Prior to her current position, Brown served as general manager of Yahoo! Media Group's Lifestyles business unit.
