Jim Sand has been appointed director of University Judiciaries, effective Dec. 1.
Sand has served as assistant director of residence life for West Green since 2006, having joined Ohio University in 1989 as an assistant green director on East Green.
"Jim comes to this position with a great deal of experience in judicial affairs and student affairs at Ohio University," said Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith. "He also has significant knowledge and experience in the area of assessment as it relates to learning outcomes, so I am excited about his appointment."
Sand earned his Ph.D. in college student personnel form Ohio University in 2000. He holds an M.S. in counseling and student personnel services from Kansas State University and M.A. and B.S. degrees in history and social science, respectively, from Northwest Missouri State University.
Since arriving on campus, Sand has served as a judicial hearing officer and coordinated the judicial work of resident directors. He has been active with a variety of committees and organizations, including Administrative Senate. Sand previously worked seven years as a residence hall director at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa; Northwest Missouri State University; and Kansas State University.
"Citizenship has been important to me dating back to high school, so in this new position I plan to bring a real sincere commitment to students," Sand said. "My ultimate goal is to help students become positive members in the community by taking proactive steps that will help guide their behavior.
"Ohio University is a great place to work," he added, "and I am excited about this opportunity to serve it in a greater way."
Sand and his wife, Nancy, live in Athens with their two daughters, Sara and Annie.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Rich Carpinelli has overseen University Judiciaries since the departure of Interim Director J. Malcolm Smith last spring.
