Baker, others host block party alternatives

Oct. 23, 2007
By Eva Simeone

Baker University Center and others on campus will offer a variety of activities for students who opt out of the Athens Halloween Block Party this weekend.

The Department of Campus Life, through its Off-Campus Living Office, will host Midnight Movies, Open Stage Mic Night, poker nights and stand-up comedy. Events run from Thursday through Saturday.

"I think we'll see a lot more traffic at these events this year because of the new Baker University Center and the increased traffic that it brings," said Assistant Director of Baker University Center Chad Barnhardt. "We have plenty of programs to appeal to the different interests of students."

Student-led initiatives also are on the agenda. National Pan-Hellenic Council sororities will host dances on Friday and Saturday in Baker Center Ballroom. GAMMA, a leadership program for fraternity and sorority members who promote wellness activities, will host an After Hours with food in Baker on Friday night.

"There's a lot of student involvement for these events," Barnhardt said. "They do the planning, and they (take care of the logistics) to select music and movies."
