The toughest task for moms who visit campus for Ohio University's annual Moms Weekend this Friday through Sunday will be narrowing down choices. Sporting events, craft and art shows, movies, dancing, outdoor recreation and shopping are just a few of the options available.
Moms who arrive early Friday can attend the softball team's 3 p.m. doubleheader or the 6 p.m. baseball game. Both teams face Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green. Saturday, the softball team hosts Toledo at 2 p.m., and the baseball team continues its series with BGSU at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Friday evening, moms can take part in the Bahama Bring Your Mama Bash in Bromley Hall from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Activities include crafts and board and video games, including bingo. The event is free, with a small crafts fee.
On Saturday, the Moms Walk for a Cure to benefit breast cancer research and awareness begins at 10 a.m. at the Ping Recreation Center. Participants can preregister for the walk this week in Baker University Center.
Saturday evening, visual performing artist Richard Hight will perform two works of art with paint at 8 p.m. in the Baker University Center Theatre.
For moms who like music, the annual Phi Beta Sigma Moms Weekend Cabaret begins at 9:30 p.m. at the Ohio University Inn. The event features a jazz band, disc jockey and light refreshments. The cost is $8 at the door.
On Sunday, the emPOWER African jewelry and crafts sale will benefit orphans and at-risk children in the Kabarole District in Uganda. The sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the College Gate.
Complementing these events are others on campus and around town, including the Dairy Barn Fest (shop all weekend for unique Athens finds), Ecohouse tours (a unique side of Ohio University's green), the Putt People First event (benefits local nonprofit organizations) and a collegiate rowing regatta (a great excuse to experience nearby Strouds Run State Park).
"Moms Weekend is one of our most popular family weekends each year, and the amount of scheduled events this weekend reflects that fact," said Director of Campus Life Anne Lombard. "I'm proud that the events not only provide entertainment, but also serve as fundraisers for the less fortunate and other important causes."
