President Roderick J. McDavis approved new Ohio University policy 12.002, which provides guidelines for awarding graduate degrees posthumously on March 6.
University Registrar Debra Benton said the policy will help to ensure that the university treats all students and families in this situation fairly using the same guidelines.
"Unfortunately we do have students who die during their studies at Ohio University," she said. "This is always a sad time, and it is nice to be able to do something for the family."
Benton worked with the Graduate Council, a group charged with reviewing, coordinating and serving as an advocate for graduate education at Ohio University, to initiate the policy. The council is comprised of faculty and administrative representatives as well as three members of Graduate Student Senate, including its president.
