Meningitis ruled out as cause of student's illness Jan 24, 2008 From staff reports
Medical tests have ruled out meningococcal meningitis as the cause of an Ohio University student's illness.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Rich Carpinelli said he received notice this morning from Athens County Health Department officials that the student does not have meningitis.
The student, who sought treatment Monday evening, was listed in good condition this morning at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor.
Meningococcal meningitis is a bacterial infection that causes severe inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord. During the three-day period required to rule out meningitis, the student and others with whom he had close contact were treated with a prophylactic antibiotic as a precautionary measure.
