February is Black History Month, and Ohio University will host a wide variety of events to celebrate the rich history of people of African descent and the contributions they have made to the United States and the world. Here's a look at some of the featured events.
Social discussions/lectures
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity will host its seventh Black Man Think Tank from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in Baker University Center Theatre. Registration is $5 at the door and includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
This year's theme is "Breaking Our Silence: Would the Real Black Men Please Stand Up!" Group discussions and a roundtable will address topics such as economic advancement, the arts, civil rights, education, health and religion. Ohio University alumni Michael T. Spencer and Rex L. Crawley will serve as keynote speakers.
National Black HIV/AIDS Information Day will take place all day Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. At 6:30 p.m., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host an HIV/AIDS Candlelight Vigil at the College Gate.
Unified Sisters and Student African American Brotherhood will host a discussion about relationships at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in Baker University Center Theatre. A panel of Ohio University faculty and staff will field questions from the audience on topics such as interracial couples, sex, marriage and dating.
The Malcolm X Commemorative will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Baker University Center Theatre. Cincinnati educator Kimya Moyo will be the keynote speaker. She founded the Sankofa Education Enrichment Program in Cincinnati in 1993. The five-year volunteer program held on Saturday mornings teaches African-American teen-agers critical-thinking skills.
The fifth annual Sport in Africa Symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Grover Center. This year's event, with the theme "Communication, Media and Sport in Africa," will feature more than 20 presenters. The event is free and open to the public.
The African Student Union will host African Heroes Night at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Baker University Center Ballroom. The free event is held each year to honor someone whose work has made a positive impact on Africa. This year's recipient and keynote speaker is Dora Nkem Akunyili, general director of Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. Since assuming her position in 2001, she has led a crackdown on illicit trade in Nigeria, including the deadly practice of importing and distributing counterfeit medicines.
Entertainment
The Black Student Cultural Programming Board will sponsor a pair of events during Sibs Weekend, Feb. 8-10. A variety show is set at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in Baker University Center Ballroom. Admission is free and open to the public. On Saturday, Feb. 9, BSCPB will host its annual Rap/Hip Hop Concert. This year's performers include Jagged Edge, Fabolous and local rapper and Ohio University alumnus Jesty Beatz. Tickets are $20 for Ohio University students and $25 for others.
The Faces Modeling Club will host a fashion show at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Baker University Center Theatre. It is free and open to the public.
Ohio University's National Association for the Advancement of Colored People chapter plans a poetry night at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Front Room in Baker University Center. It is free and open to the public.
The Black History Month Trivia Game will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in Baker University Center Theatre. The event tests the audience's knowledge of black history. It is free and open to the public.
Bob Marley Day is planned for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in Baker University Center Ballroom. The event will feature music from Columbus-based reggae group Flex Crew. It also includes a Taste of Caribbean Culture, featuring an assortment of authentic Caribbean foods. Caribbean clothing and jewelry will be sold at the event, which is free and open to the public.
