Engineering professors named fellows

Jan 18, 2008
By By Colleen Girton and Melissa Gerber

Two Ohio University engineering professors have been named fellows of major professional organizations in their respective fields.

Moss Professor of Mechanical Engineering Khairul Alam was named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Fellows for demonstrating significant engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession.

AMSE is one of the oldest and, with 120,000 members, largest professional organizations. Among 161 ASME members to be awarded fellow grade in 2006-2007, Alam joins a distinguished group of 2,915 fellows.

A faculty member since 1983, Alam also is director of the Center for Advanced Materials Processing. His research is integral to a project aimed at developing the next generation of heat exchangers for military airplanes and spacecraft. For that project, which earned a $1.6 million shared federal appropriation, he will work with GrafTech International, the Ohio Aerospace Institute and Air Force Research Laboratories.

Alam is the recipient of several teaching recognitions and research awards from academic and research institutions, including Ohio University and NASA. After studying at MCC in Bangladesh, he received a scholarship to attend the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from IIT-Kanpur, graduating at the top of the class and receiving the Banco Foundation Award. Subsequently, he completed his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1984. During his graduate studies, he was a co-author of a patent on particle processing aerosol reactor.

During his tenure at Ohio University, he has been awarded several patents and received research funding from federal and state agencies and industry. His recent work has focused on novel carbon structures, carbon fiber composites and thermal management in electronics.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Professor Srdjan Nesic was named a fellow of NACE International for his dedication to corrosion research and his commitment to corrosion education, especially in the areas of CO2 corrosion mechanisms and modeling.

NACE, with more than 17,000 members in 100 countries, has named only 150 fellows.

Nesic joined Ohio University in 2002 as director of the Institute for Corrosion and Multiphase Technology, which performs research for leading oil and gas companies across the globe.

Nesic, who has held academic posts in Australia and Italy, also was awarded NACE International's H.H. Uhlig Award in 2007 for significant outstanding effectiveness in post-secondary corrosion education at the undergraduate or graduate level as exhibited by young educators who excite their students through outstanding and innovative teaching in corrosion.

He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Belgrade, in the former Yugoslavia, and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Six additional Russ College faculty members are fellows or associate fellows in other leading engineering and technology professional organizations.
