Founders Day Convocation celebrates academic excellence Feb 14, 2008
Ohio University's Founders Day Convocation, celebrating the past year's academic accomplishments by students and faculty, begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. At 7:30 p.m. that day, the university's newest Distinguished Professor, Mark Phillips of the School of Music, will present a public lecture in Walter Hall 135.
Executive Vice President and Provost Kathy Krendl will convene the convocation and single out faculty award recipients. Ann Fidler, dean of Honors Tutorial College, will recognize the wide array of student scholars, and President Roderick J. McDavis will deliver the Founders Day address.
This year's convocation also will feature selected readings from the "Of Place" essay series. Articles in the series, written by Ohio University faculty and staff, focus on the unique attributes of Ohio University and Athens. They are featured in their entirety on the Provost's Web site.
A reception will follow the convocation in Baker Center's fourth-floor Mutchler Lounge near the ballroom.
A dessert reception at 7 p.m. in the Walter Hall Atrium will precede Phillips' Distinguished Professor Lecture. An internationally recognized composer, Phillips will share his motivations and techniques for music composition in a lecture titled, "Behind the Music: How and Why I Compose."
All members of the university community are invited and encouraged to attend the day's events, and supervisors are asked to make it possible for their employees to participate. Awardees and others who have received personal invitations are asked to respond promptly.
Ohio University recognizes Feb. 18, 1804, the day the state's General Assembly chartered the university, as Founders Day.
