March offers plenty to do

As another quarter comes to a close, unwind by enjoying some of the many events happening before spring break.

School of Music

The School of Music hosts 16 events this month featuring visiting artists, students and faculty. In fact, seven of the school's nine ensembles will offer performances before March 15. (See related story.)

Highlights include: The Singing Men of Ohio's annual Alumni Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday; a performance by the Symphonic and University Bands at 4 p.m. Sunday; and a performance by the Wind Ensemble and University Singers at 8 p.m. Friday, March 7. All performances will be held in Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium.

This month's visiting artists include Duo Montagnard, featuring saxophonist Joseph Murphy and guitarist Matthew Slotkin, who will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 9, and multimedia performer and composer Mark Snyder, performing at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13. Both concerts are in the School of Music Recital Hall.

School of Art

The Undergraduate Juried Exhibition, featuring the work of undergraduate students in the School of Art, begins March 6 in the Ohio University Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

School of Dance

The Ohio University Dance Company presents Winter Dance Concert '08, a concert of dances choreographed and reconstructed by visiting artists and faculty. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. March 6-8 and at 2 p.m. March 8. All performances will take place in the Elizabeth Baker Theater in Kantner Hall. Admission is free for students, and general admission is $12.

Kennedy Museum of Art

If you haven't caught it already, don't miss the 2008 School of Art Faculty Art Exhibition, which closes Sunday, March 16. The exhibit features pieces from more than 30 Ohio University School of Art faculty members representing a diverse range of disciplines.

Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

School of Theater

This month also is your last chance to catch "From Page to Stage: The Technology of Theatrical Design: Tom Fiocchi, Kjersten Lester-Moratzka, C. David Russell." The exhibit, which features costumes, props and stage-set design that highlight the merging of old and new technologies to create fresh visions, will be on display through Saturday, March 8, in Baker Center's Trisolini Gallery.

Performing Arts Series

Mountain Stage travels across the state border to Ohio University at 7 p.m. Monday for a show at Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium. Next week's show features Ani DiFranco, moe., Big Head Todd and the Monsters, George Stanford and Paul Kelly. (See related story.)

Tickets range from $20 to $35 and can be ordered online at www.ohiotickets.musictoday.com or purchased at the Memorial Auditorium box office.

Intercollegiate Athletics

It's Mid-American Conference Championship season for winter sports, and Ohio University is already off to a great start with the swimming and diving team capturing its 10th MAC Championship last weekend.

Catch the wrestling team in action March 7 during the MAC Championships at Kent State.

The men's basketball team will finish its regular season play with games on Saturday at Miami University before returning home Tuesday to take on the University of Akron, and March 9 against the University of Buffalo. MAC Tournament play begins March 12 in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena.

The women's basketball team will round out its season with games Saturday at Kent State University, Monday at Northern Illinois University and Wednesday at Miami University. MAC Tournament play begins March 9 at Quicken Loans Arena.

Ohio University basketball fans can order discounted tickets for the 2008 MAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments at the Athletics Ticket Office in the Convocation Center. Fans who place orders before 5 p.m. March 7 for the women's tournament and 5 p.m. March 10 for the men's tournament have the option of buying only tickets for sessions involving the Bobcats instead of the entire tournament. The baseball team opens its season at home Tuesday against Ohio Wesleyan University. The team's home games for the month are as follows: Wednesday vs. University of Rio Grande; March11 vs. West Virginia State University; March 13-16 vs. Purdue University; March 26 the Bobcats play in Chillicothe against the University of Cincinnati; and March 28-30 vs. Western Michigan University.

The softball team has its first home game of the season on Wednesday against Radford University and also will play March 29 and 30 at Miami University.
