Ohio University Pride Week, which begins Wednesday, will feature a series of events that give lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals an opportunity to showcase their pride. The theme is "PRIDE! ... And proud of it."
This year's Pride Week activities include a strong emphasis on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender images in film as a result of it coinciding with the Athens International Film + Video Festival. Pride Week includes 20 educational and social events that are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Click here for a list of scheduled activities.
"LGBT Pride activities around the country are typically held in June, but since Ohio University is not in regular session at that time, we hold our own Pride Week during the month of April, in conjunction with the National Day of Silence on April 25," said Pride Week Committee Chair Erica Boehnlein.
In conjunction with Pride Week, the LGBT Center will launch its 2008 Faces of Pride campaign, featuring 38 LGBT and allied students, faculty and staff. To view photos of individuals that will appear on posters across campus, visit www.ohio.edu/lgbt/faces2008.cfm.
Pride Week is coordinated by students through the Ohio University Student Senate's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Affairs Commission. Co-sponsors include Empowering Women of Ohio; Ohio University's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Center; ALLY; Open Doors; Up in Arms; Amnesty International; United Campus Ministry; the Ohio University Women's Center; University Program Council; Student Activities Commission; and the Athens International Film + Video Festival.
