Saturday is VisCom Day Apr 17, 2008
School of Visual Communication students, faculty and alumni will examine changes and challenges within the visual communication industry -- and celebrate an array of awards -- during this year's VisCom Day, which begins at 9:15 a.m. Saturday in Walter Hall 145. The day will end with the gallery opening of the VisCom Student Show at the Athens Dairy Barn from 5 to 7 p.m.
The events are open to all and free of charge.
Among VisCom's awards this year, the school project "Soul of Athens" won Best Use of the Web in the international Best of Photojournalism competition and took second in the Pictures of the Year International competition for best small market multimedia. Students and projects have won national recognition from the Society of News Design, the World Press and the Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio. And for the second year in a row, an Ohio University VisCom student was named College Photographer of the Year.
The day's events include:
- 9:15-9:30 a.m.: Welcome and introduction
- 9:30-10:40 a.m.: Grover Sanschagrin: "Web Business for Creative Talent"
Grover Sanschagrin, who studied photography and photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Ohio University, is vice president of marketing for PhotoShelter and executive producer for SportsShooter.com.
- 10:50 a.m. -noon: Dirk Shadd: "Classroom to Staff-Photojournalism in a Changing Time"
Shadd, who hold bachelor's degree from the School of Visual Communication, joined The St. Petersburg Times in 1998 as a daily assignment and photo projects staff photographer.
- noon to 1 p.m.: Lunch
- 1-1:45 p.m.: Student scholarships awards and presentations
- 1:45-2:50 p.m.: Jean Herr: "Picture Editing and Content Management for Magazines"
Herr, also a VisCom graduate, was the picture editor for Real Simple in 2004 when it earned Adweek Magazine's Creative Team of the Year award. She is the photography director of Cottage Living Magazine.
- 3-4 p.m.: Andrew DeVigal: "Changing Multimedia at The New York Times"
A staff artist, graphic journalist, Web designer and professor, DeVigal is the multimedia editor at The New York Times.
