Thursday's Earth Week tip Apr 17, 2008
Throughout Earth Week, the Office of Sustainability will provide daily suggestions for incorporating hassle-free, environment-friendly actions into your regular routine. Today's tip:
What's Your Connection to Mountaintop Mined Coal? Mountaintop-removal mining is a highly destructive form of coal extraction in which mountains are literally blown up in order to access the coal seam inside. This practice is widespread and has devastated landscapes in West Virginia and Kentucky, polluted waterways and displaced rural communities. Get a sense of your own connection to mountaintop mining by visiting www.ilovemountains.org/myconnection/ and typing in your home zip code. With the help of Google Earth, you will be able to see mountaintop-removal sites that are directly linked to coal-fired plants in the Ohio River Valley.
Plan now for Earth Day, April 22, when Ohio University employees and students are being asked to walk, bike or carpool to work.
