ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 16, 2006) -- The terminations of two IT managers over data security breaches discovered earlier this year will stand, Ohio University's provost has ruled.
Tom Reid, director of Communication Network Services, and Todd Acheson, UNIX systems manager with Communication Network Services, were fired in July by Chief Information Officer Bill Sams on the grounds of "nonfeasance."
Reid and Acheson filed grievances in August. Last month, a committee of the Administrative Senate recommended reinstating both men. Under university policy, the provost has the final authority for deciding grievances.
Yesterday (Nov. 15), Provost Kathy Krendl sent letters to both men stating that she has reviewed the matter and supports the terminations.
"I must conclude that responsibility for designing and maintaining a secure network resided in your office," Krendl wrote. "I support Mr. Sams's finding of nonfeasance, noting that this finding does not indicate any intentional or purposeful wrongdoing. It does not indicate that you intended to put our data at risk, but in fact, that was the result of failing to take the necessary proactive steps to protect confidential information."
