ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 2, 2006) -- Dennis Irwin, dean of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University, has made a bequest of $250,000 to The Ohio University Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship.
Honoring Irwin's mother, the Martha C. Irwin Classified Staff Education Fund will assist Ohio University classified staff employees wishing to complete their undergraduate education. Recipients can be pursuing any major, but nontraditional students are preferred. One student will be awarded the scholarship per year.
Irwin hopes the scholarship will enable recipients to take time off work to further their studies -- something his mother wasn't able to do.
"She was a civil service employee for the Air Force for 28 years and always wanted her bachelor's degree, but didn't go back to school because of the financial impact on our family," Irwin said.
The Ohio University Foundation is the repository for all private gifts through annual giving programs, capital, and special campaigns and planned or deferred gifts. The Foundation is an institutionally related, non-profit, tax-exempt, 501c(3) organization.
