Quilt display to commemorate Women's History Month

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (March 5, 2007) -- Ohio University-Chillicothe will commemorate National Women's History Month 2007 with a display of quilts created by students in the Women's Studies 100 class. The quilts are on display in the Bennett Hall Patricia Scott Memorial Gallery.

"The historically female artistry of quilt-making inspired me to create a research assignment for women's studies students. The purpose is for students to illustrate themes that support National Women's History Month and that promote the lives and accomplishments of influential women," said Associate Professor of Communication Studies Lisa Wallace, Ph.D., who teaches the class. "Previously, I had the students write a term paper, but the quilts present an opportunity for the students to showcase research in a much more creative outlet."

Approximately 25 quilts will cover the walls. The quilts are designed by students working individually or as teams.

The quilts can be made of any material.

The top three quilts from 2006 will again be displayed, and a judging will be held to choose the top three quilts from this year.

The top three quilts from 2006 included the following themes:
  • Appalachian women
  • Famous quotes from influential women
  • Women in music

Patricia Scott Memorial Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. The gallery is free and open to the public.
